What is Downtown?
Downtown is a 3D city on the web where a company buys a plot of land and builds a tower on it. Every floor of the tower describes one real thing the company does: a product, a team, a project, a customer story. Visitors see a company description and website link first. Exploring the floors is optional. It is at downtown.company and was built by Raj Sajnani, a solo developer in Bangalore, India.
How much does it cost?
Floors cost $0.50 each and are paid for once. A twelve-floor tower on open land costs $6.00. There is no subscription and nothing renews. The price of a floor is multiplied by your land value, which rises when neighbouring towers get taller, up to three times the base price. Facade lettering costs $2 per letter. Furnishing floors, choosing your tower colour and putting up a hiring board are all free.
What do I actually get for the money?
A permanent plot on a 64-plot map, a tower as tall as the number of floors you bought, and a page at downtown.company/t/yourdomain that anyone can visit. You write what goes on each floor, pick your tower's colour, and can mark a floor invite-only so it opens just for people you hand a key to. The first nine companies to buy also get a founding tenant badge that is never issued again.
Does Downtown replace my website or About page?
No. Your website remains the place for your full offer, pricing and contact details. Downtown is another place for people to discover your company. Visitors can read what you do and who you serve, then go straight to your website. The building is an optional way to explore your products, projects and stories.
Why own a tower here?
You get a company profile, a place in the city and directory, and an optional building you can furnish and share. Owners can opt into the free company spotlight rotation, and readers can subscribe to the weekly Downtown Dispatch. Owner tools show approximate visits and website clicks so you can see what interest your listing receives. Being listed does not guarantee traffic or customers.
Is this a subscription?
No. Every purchase on Downtown is a single one-time payment. Nothing recurring is ever created, there is nothing to cancel, and no card is charged again. Payments are handled by Dodo Payments as merchant of record, so local taxes such as GST are added at checkout and the amount charged in your currency can be higher than the dollar price shown.
What does "yours for life" mean?
It means there is no renewal and the tower will not be taken down or the plot resold while Downtown is running. It does not mean forever, because no website is forever. If Downtown ever closes, every buyer gets at least 30 days of notice by email.
How does the land value work?
Your land value is 1 plus the total number of floors on the eight adjoining plots divided by 100, capped at three times. Building a tall tower makes the plots around you more expensive for everyone else. It is recalculated from the buildings actually standing there, so it always matches the skyline.
Can I expand onto a neighbouring plot?
Yes. Open your own tower and choose Expand your property. You can buy one empty plot sharing a boundary, making one wider building across at most two parcels. Roads and diagonal plots cannot be merged. Expansion costs your existing floor count times the new parcel’s floor rate, excluding your own tower from the neighbour surcharge. Your earlier payment stays credited. After expansion, added floors are priced across both parcels. At base rates, expanding a 10-floor tower costs $5, and adding 10 more floors to the two-plot property costs $10. Both parcels count toward the city’s 64 plots. Splitting a merged property is not currently supported.
Can I fill in my tower using AI?
Yes, and it is the intended way. You copy a single prompt out of the site, paste it into whatever AI assistant you already use, and paste the JSON it returns back into Downtown. Every floor is then named and furnished at once. There is no charge for this and no model runs on Downtown's side.
Who is Downtown for?
Founders, indie hackers, agencies and small software companies who want a permanent, visual place on the internet that is more interesting than a directory entry. It works best for a company with several distinct things worth showing, because each one becomes its own floor.
